This always-popular growing restaurant chain makes a tasty version of creamy ranch dressing for its house and Queensland salads. To get the same unique flavor and creaminess of the original at home, mates, you'll need one teaspoon of Hidden Valley Ranch instant salad dressing mix swimming in there with the mayo and buttermilk and other spices. Since there's three teaspoons of dressing mix per packet, you'll now be able to make three batches of dressing with one envelope of dressing mix.

1 teaspoon Hidden Valley Ranch dressing mix (buttermilk recipe)
1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/4 teaspoon coarse grind black pepper
1/8 teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

1. Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl. Mix well.

2. Cover bowl and chill dressing for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Makes 1 1/2 cups.

Tidbits: Make sure you are using the Hidden Valley Ranch dressing mix that says "Buttermilk Recipe." It's the one that comes in 0.4 ounce packets. Any other mix won't work as well for this clone.

I have never cared for the bottled ranch dressings in the grocery stores, but always liked what they served in restaurants. I worked at an Outback in college, and this recipe is amazingly close, if not it. I followed someone else's suggestion and substituted the paprika for cayenne, as Outback's really does have more of a peppery kick to it. Really easy to make, and delicious!

Almost every brand of mayo has been adding sugar to their mixes which makes them taste more like Miracle Whip. For a less sweet flavor, I use either Duke's (no sugar added) or Hellman's (less sugar).
I love it!

After reading some of the reviews, I thought I would put a little twist of my own into it...had my hubby try it and he said it was spot on. I mixed the package up according to the directions, but used 2% milk instead of buttermilk. After letting it set for 30 minutes, I added the following spices to half of the dressing: 1/8 tsp of Lawry's Black Pepper Seasoned Salt; 1/4 tsp black pepper; 1/4 tsp onion powder; 1/4 tsp garlic powder; 1/4 tsp paprika; 1/4 tsp ancho chile pepper. OMG.

I'm impressed with the recipe after substituting paprika with cayenne. As a former employee of the restaurant (and hopefully will be with the company again one day) I know this really just about hits the nail on the head. Great job.
Pretty good

Tried it out since i get TUBS of Outback's ranch. It's almost there but. Not quite. Peprika didn't cut it. So i tried Chili Powder. Needed a LOT more than the recipe called for. But the end result is fantastic

I have used this recipe several times when I have guests for dinner and I have never had a problem with it as long as I use the right dressing mix and don't taste it until it sits in the fridge for the full 30 minutes. If you taste it as you're making it, it won't taste right. But I have to be honest, I use this recipe, like I use any other, as a jumping off point. I can customize it until it tastes the way I want it to. I've used thyme and even rosemary in this to make a "secret" recipe that people beg me for.

I LOVE this recipe but when I first made it, it was to "blah" I also added a pinch of red pepper (to taste) thena little extra garlic powder. I also used the entire thing of butter milk dressing mix as well as Dukes brand mayo. This makes more at one time, and it GREAT!!

When I first tried this recipe, I wasn't completely in love with it. It was better than any other out there but was a little bit sweeter than the restaurant. I read the comment from the former employee and started substituting the red pepper for paprika and now it is a staple in my kitchen...an exact replica.

Wow! Have you made my son happy - he is addicted to Outback's Ranch Dressing and we have tried to buy something that would come close. Do I need to say how much we've spent trying to find it? This dressing is outstanding . . . my son is happy and we will never buy store bought dressing again. Deserves to be 20 stars if possible.
