Talk Soup #2
June 1997
At least we know that someone was watching Fox After Breakfast before it got cancelled. Most notably, the writers for E!'s Talk Soup.

You have to think a big part of the reason the fourth network's little morning show failed was that after original host Tom Bergeron left the show, he was replaced with unfamiliar guest hosts. After this TSR appearance the show was quickly bumped into TV history.

The Soup replayed part of the Big Mac preparation and the taste test from my segment (if you'd like to see the rest of the segment, check out "Fox After Breakfast" by clicking here).

Talk Soup host John Henson sets up the clip: "Tom Bergeron has only been on vacation for a few days and already the After Breakfast gang is running amok. I mean who ever heard of eating fast food burgers first thing in the morning? It's just not right! Nonetheless, that's exactly what guest host Nancy Giles is preparing to do in the next highlight. She'll be joined by ex-NBA star John Salley and author Todd Wilbur demonstrating the best way to make a fake Big Mac."

John helps me build the burger. I explain that the beef patties should be made real thin to recreate the taste and texture of a real Big Mac. Then I show how to make the middle bun by cutting the top off of a regular top bun.

Next, we grill the faces of the buns in a hot frying pan, then John spreads the "special" sauce (yeah, it's just thousand island dressing) on two of the buns (one is the middle bun).

Next we stack on the minced onions, lettuce and cheese. Then comes a very strange moment. As John is placing the pickles on the hamburger, he says that he has some friends who used to work at McDonald's who would lick the pickles before placing them on the burger. He demonstrates by licking one of the pickles and then he puts it right on the burger. I just laugh nervously, but I'm thinking, "Yech, dude!"

We finish assembling the burger by adding the the beef patties and the first part of the segment is done.

But John Henson has more for us, "Alright gang. Let's see if Nancy can tell which is the real Big Mac and which is the fake."

Nancy puts on the blindfold and takes a giant mouthful of each of the burgers.

"I think the real one is the second one," she says. "Am I right?"
Perhaps it was the extra slimy pickle that gave it away. We tell her she got it and she freaks.

"Alright! I got it! Yeah. I'm a Big Mac afficianado," Nancy yells with her arms out in victory. "But they are darn close, I'll tell you something."

That leaves John with one more comment, off to the side as if talking to crew, "Oh, man she nailed it. Wow. You know Bergeron would have picked the fake. You just know it."

You know, I think from now on I'll order my McDonald's burgers without pickles.
