If you like Big Macs, its probably because of that tasty "secret" spread that is plopped onto both decks of the world's most popular double-decker hamburger. So what's so special about this sauce? After all, its basically just thousand island dressing, right? Pretty much. But this sauce has a bit more sweet pickle relish in it than a typical thousand island salad slather. Also, I found that this clone comes close to the original with the inclusion of French dressing. It's an important ingredient - ketchup just wont do it. That, along with a sweet and sour flavor that comes from vinegar and sugar, makes this sauce go well on any of your home burger creations, whether they're Big Mac clones or not. This is the closest "special sauce" clone you'll find anywhere.

1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons French dressing
4 teaspoons sweet pickle relish
1 tablespoon finely minced white onion
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt

1. Combine all of the ingredients in a small bowl. Stir well.

2. Place sauce in a covered container and refrigerate for several hours, or overnight, so that the flavors blend. Stir the sauce a couple of times as it chills.

Makes about 3/4 cup.

Great tasting

Super close

Very close but once I ate a big Mac and the sauce tasted like malt vinegar, and I'm almost positive that's what was used in the original but good job!
Not bad at all

Wasn't perfect, but I should note that I didn't have regular french dressing, just the creamy orange country french, so I used that instead. I'm not a fan of vinegar, so I left that out. Otherwise it came out pretty good, much better than other mock Mac sauces that I've tried.

Close, but the actual sauce from McD has mustard powder and turmeric in it. Also, they use paprika, onion powder and garlic powder in the recipe. I've also found that dill relish rather than sweet relish gives a closer taste to the real thing. At least you didn't say "Thousand Island Dressing" which everyone wants to say tastes "just like the Secret Sauce". I don't know if they have a terrible memory or if they have poor tastebuds, but Thousand Island tastes NOTHING like

Amazing! Added a bit of ketchup as didn't have any French dressing but worked really well, now I can have a healthier home made version of the Big Mac, nice. (It's their buns that contain all the really bad stuff!)

Pretty good but I agree with other comment. I added 1 tablespoon of ketchup and 1 teaspoon of sweet pickles plus I also added half teaspoon of mild mustard. Cheers

After being placed on cholesterol meds I've been looking for ways to enjoy soy burgers. This sauce with the "All American flame grilled" Boca burger (which tastes like a Burger King patty) is amazing! It's a cholesterol-free, meatless Big MAC that is around 400 calories. Even with only 1 patty it is fantastic and knocks it down to under 300 calories.

I added a 1/2 a TBSP more White onion, one TSP of Ketchup and one tsp more Sweet Pickled Relish! Felt that made it perfect! Went to McDonalds & bought a Big mac and asked for more Special sauce on it! Compared it to this recipe, plus what i added, made it just like McDonalds Special sauce! Thanks!!

I couldn't tell when I tasted it alone. It basically tasted like a sweeter version of Thousand Island. Once I put it on my Big Mac clone, it really convinced me. It tasted just like the special sauce. Good job.

used this for a few years and misplaced my original copy. Glad to find it again...especially good on portobello mushroom burgers...use the mushroom as the burger(grill w/steak sauce and seasoning in the cap)
Submitted on: 06/06/06
It's good! but it can be better. Instead of using fresh onion, use dehydrated onion and rehydrate it in warm water. Turns a nine into a ten!! Enjoy.

It's a perfect clone. Its awesome on hamburgers and believe it or not, its also really good on Turkey Sandwiches.

I have been using this for years. It does taste like the real thing. Although it tastes good on any burger, I buy the cheap, cheap frozen patties. Great for a bunch of hungry teens! and the adults like it too.
