If you've never had a Chelada, the idea of mixing beer with Clamato juice may make your stomach turn. This odd combination of beverages has origins in Mexico that date back to the 1940s, when beer was mixed with lime, salt, and hot sauce or salsa. In early 2008, Anheuser-Busch (Budweiser) and Cadbury-Schweppes (Clamato) teamed up to produce the first canned Chelada beverage, which they dubbed "The Red One," and after a successful launch in select western states, the product is now exploding across the country. Many swear by the drink as a remarkable hangover cure, and after some extensive personal experimentation, I must concur.

This drink is very common in the bars and Lounges in Canada. I didn't realize that everybody didn't know about this along time ago.

Here in Canada we add a pickle spear or pickled asparagus or bean as a stir stick to this sociable.

This is not considered a Chelada in Spanish speaking countries. This is Cowboy Beer. A michelada has all the same seasonings but no Clamato juice. A chelada is just lime juice salt and Mexican beer.

This is weekly ritual at our house. For those who don't like Clamato, (I do) substitute with V8.

I was a bartender for years, we called it the poor man's Bloody Mary. It's good with Clamato, but I prefer using tomato juice and seasonings, or add your own Bloody Mary mix. Yummy!

| In Canada, we call it a "Red Eye". We've been serving it for well over 30 years. And yes, if you have a hang over, it's a great cure.
Cheers,
